Această carte începe foarte frumos și apoi nu înțelegi ce se întâmpla; nu mai contează povestea ci cum e spusă povestea， ca în final să nu rămâi cu un gust amar。Pare a fi un basm， contează călătoria și transformarea deși unele lucruri sunt mai mult ghicite decât explicate in carte。Nu e genul meu de carte， deși cartea poate fi pe placul unor persoane și aș recomanda-o celor ce urmăresc detalii istorice împletite cu realitatea。

The Slaughterman's Daughter is the tale of a Jewish wife who abandons her family to find her sister's runaway husband and force him to sign divorce papers， or at least that's what it starts as。 What it ends up being is far less clear， more like a rebellion against pessimism or fatalism。 It is richly embedded with Jewish culture and is exceptionally written and translated （by Orr Scharf）。 I think an NY Times review had it right when it says it would be ample material for a Coen Brothers adaptatio The Slaughterman's Daughter is the tale of a Jewish wife who abandons her family to find her sister's runaway husband and force him to sign divorce papers， or at least that's what it starts as。 What it ends up being is far less clear， more like a rebellion against pessimism or fatalism。 It is richly embedded with Jewish culture and is exceptionally written and translated （by Orr Scharf）。 I think an NY Times review had it right when it says it would be ample material for a Coen Brothers adaptation。 Humor is thickly embedded in everything， punctuated by sudden violence， and there are a few sympathetic individuals swimming in a sea of idiocy。 What is it about？ I'm still not sure I know。 I do know that I enjoyed every minute of the book。 What it all means is still ambiguous for me。 I'd love to hash it out with whoever feels like reading this。 The biggest theme I feel like I picked up on was a rebellion against fatalism。 Maybe there is a better word for it。 The world that Iczkovitz presents is one where senseless tragedy is the norm。 People hate it， but hey， what can you do？ Everybody's just trying to survive， and that often means keeping your head down when someone else is unjustly singled out。 The main characters all reject this indifference。 They take a step back and say， no， I won't sit back and let it happen。 Does it really help？ That's unclear。 It'd be easy to argue all they ever do is make things worse， for themselves， and for everyone around them。 Nonetheless， they seem do live without regret， even as everything they care for burns down around them。 Fanny is an amazing focus of the story。 Most resilient of all of them， she witnesses the slow decay that comes from acceptance of their horrible life， and stands up， single-handedly， and risks everything she has to say "No。" She doesn't even know what she should be doing， just that she should be doing something， even if that costs her everything。 The main characters were all impeccably sympathetic。 The Jewish and Russian culture shine through so powerfully， they begin to feel familiar， even nostalgic。 There were lots of parts that were laugh-out-loud funny。 The second chapter titled "Grodno" was one of the best pieces of literature I have ever read。 I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys the Russian classics， or the Coen Brothers' style of humor。 It's also just an excellent example of writing， with impeccable characterization and ambiance。 。。。more

O carte cu un subiect ambițios care începe foarte bine dar care își pierde suflul pe parcurs。 Multe personaje admirabil conturate sunt abandonate și nu mai știi nimic de soarta lor， la fel și unele fire ale poveștii， care rămân suspendate și neterminate。 Brusc， centrul de greutate al poveștii se schimbă și nu-și mai regăsește echilibrul până la final。 Nu m-a convins。

Iczkovits' writing is so alluring， philosophical yet hilarious， critical， and sarcastic。 I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each character in this novel， and the author did develop e v e r y character without losing neither my interest or the thread of the story。 And more than anything， what a delight to accompany Fanny Keismann in her journey。 She is the epitome of badassery。 She is a Jew woman， a mother of five， a sister， a loving wife （in her own unique way）， but also she is the slaughterma Iczkovits' writing is so alluring， philosophical yet hilarious， critical， and sarcastic。 I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each character in this novel， and the author did develop e v e r y character without losing neither my interest or the thread of the story。 And more than anything， what a delight to accompany Fanny Keismann in her journey。 She is the epitome of badassery。 She is a Jew woman， a mother of five， a sister， a loving wife （in her own unique way）， but also she is the slaughterman's daughter， a wild animal， an abnormality， and so much more。 She is too much for her sister， for her husband， for her mother-in-law， for her community， too much for the freaking Czar's army， and because she's all that， she is what women have all the right to be， too damn much。 What a great read！ 🖤👏👌🏼🖤 。。。more

Mam mieszane uczucia。 Z jednej strony jest to naprawdę dobrze napisany （a w moim przypadku przetłumaczony） kawał literatury。 Widać tu piękny język i styl， czyta się bardzo przyjemnie。 Niestety z drugiej strony jest to książka bardzo przegadana。 Zasadniczo fabułę możnaby srtreścić na jednej stronie。 Dlatego momentami była to powieść dość nużąca i zbyt rozwlekła。

4，5 Sterne Zu Beginn dachte ich， das wird ein absolutes Highlight。 Und lange sah es auch total so aus。 Allerdings hat mich das Buch im letzten Drittel etwas verloren。 Ich fand ab da bekam es einige Längen und es hat sich mir nicht immer so ganz erschlossen， warum diese Punkte noch erzählt wurden。 Es gab jedenfalls mehrere Kapitel die mir keinen Mehrwert geboten haben。 Trotzdem fand ich den Roman über weite Strecken hinweg großartig und würde ihn daher auch immer weiter empfehlen， wenn mich jeman 4，5 Sterne Zu Beginn dachte ich， das wird ein absolutes Highlight。 Und lange sah es auch total so aus。 Allerdings hat mich das Buch im letzten Drittel etwas verloren。 Ich fand ab da bekam es einige Längen und es hat sich mir nicht immer so ganz erschlossen， warum diese Punkte noch erzählt wurden。 Es gab jedenfalls mehrere Kapitel die mir keinen Mehrwert geboten haben。 Trotzdem fand ich den Roman über weite Strecken hinweg großartig und würde ihn daher auch immer weiter empfehlen， wenn mich jemand fragt， ob ich einen Roman zu jüdischem Leben im 19。 Jahrhundert kenne。 Was mir gefehlt hat war ein Glossar und auch ein Personenregister。 Da der Roman verschiedenen Charakteren folgt， verliert man ehrlich gesagt immer mal den Überblick wer wer ist。 Es gibt nämlich keine feste Reihenfolge in der diese auftauchen。 Außerdem ist die Geschichte doch schon offensichtlich an ein Publikum gerichtet， das die jüdischen Begriffe kennt und sie ein zu ordnen weiß。 Da hätte ich vom Verlag erwartet， eben Erläuterungen vor zu finden。 Und obwohl ich mich durchaus auskenne， war mir eben nicht alles geläufig。 Ich glaube in einer deutschsprachigen Übersetzung würde es einen Anhang geben。 Nun zum eigentlichen Inhalt。 Ich fand The Slaughterman's Daughter immer dann besonders lesenswert wenn es um jüdisches Leben und die jüdische Gemeinschaft geht， in der alles seinen Ausgang findet。 Man merkt das der Autor hier sehr gut recherchiert hat und auch einen wissenschaftlichen Berater hatte。 Es war aber lebendig erzählt und mir gefiel vor allem auch der starke Fokus auf die Frauenfiguren。 Die haben kaum eine Chance aus ihrer Rolle aus zu brechen， und sobald sie verlassen werden und der Ehemann unauffindbar bleibt， haben sie so gut wie keine Möglichkeiten Gesellschaftlich wieder anerkannt zu werden。 Dieser Status der Agunah （wie es im hebräischen heißt） ist damit ein Schwebezustand， der Frauen noch stärker einschränkte。 Sie haben sich weiterhin wie eine Ehefrau zu verhalten， durften aber gleichzeitig nicht noch einmal heiraten。 Was übrigens für den Mann nicht galt。。。 Interessant ist hier， das Fanny im Grunde das gleiche macht wie ihr Schwager。 Während aber über diesen kaum schlecht gesprochen wird， wird Fanny sofort stigmatisiert und ihre Schwiegermutter denkt sogar darüber nach， wie sie den eigenen Sohn schnell wieder verheiraten könnte und wer dafür in Frage käme。 Das russische Zarenreich Ende des 19。 Jahrhunderts war antisemitisch geprägt。 Gleichzeitig ist es aber auch eine Zeit mit reicher jüdischer Kultur in diesen Gebieten， aber einer Kultur die sich von den Shtetln wegbewegte。 Durch verschiedene Progrome flohen viele Juden/Jüdinnen in die USA oder in andere europäische Gebiete。 Und ja， der Antisemitismus spielt durchaus eine Rolle， ist aber nicht！ das Hauptthema des Buches。 Im Zentrum stehen die vielen Geschichten， die der Autor in seinem Roman erzählt。 Fanny ist dabei dreh und Angelpunkt und verbindet die eine Welt des Shtetls mit der in den Städten， den Soldaten und sogar letztendlich dem ganzen Zarenreich。 Durch die verschiedenen Blickwinkel entsteht ein lebendiges Bild dieser vielen Menschen。 Alle haben unterschiedliche Blicke auf die Ereignisse und dadurch auch sehr unterschiedliche Meinungen。 Fanny z。B。 möchte eigentlich vor allem eines: den Ehemann ihrer Schwester zurückholen， damit er sich seiner Verantwortung stellt。 Doch für ihre Familie sind ihre Beweggründe nicht verständlich， sie sehen nur eine Frau die ihre Kinder im Stich lässt。 Die russischen Soldaten glauben gar an eine politische Verschwörung。 Der Roman ist so vieles，。。。 Einen historischer Blick auf eine Zeit die in Deutschland meist nicht aus jüdischem Blickwinkel erzählt wird。 Er greift dabei auch feministische Motive auf und lässt viele Frauen zu Wort kommen， an einigen Stellen hat das Ganze auch einen tollen Humor und ist fast ein wenig absurd。 Es gibt sogar Elemente von Kriminal- und Abenteuergeschichten。 Manchmal verliert sich der Autor aber eben auch in diesen vielen Verschiedenen Aspekten und den vielen unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln die er sehr ausführlich erzählt。 Das führt dann auch zu den bereits erwähnten Längen an manchen Stellen。 Gleichzeitig entsteht ein sehr lebendiges Bild über jüdisches Leben im Zarenreich， wenn auch der Fokus schon sehr stark auf den Figuren liegt。 Ich fand es trotz meiner Kritikpunkte wirklich sehr gut， aber ein absolutes Highlight wurde es wie gesagt dann doch nicht mehr。 。。。more

A buddy story about a road trip from a shtetl to the big city in 19th century Russia with lots of slap stick humor and human tragedy， I enjoyed the first part of the story but missed the bigger point of it all。 I guess very bad things can happen to an individual and their community faster than a Chasid can recite the Mourner’s Kaddish and the pogroms that Jews were victims of for centuries ended up being small losses compared to the Holocaust。 That comes through in this book and resonates today。 A buddy story about a road trip from a shtetl to the big city in 19th century Russia with lots of slap stick humor and human tragedy， I enjoyed the first part of the story but missed the bigger point of it all。 I guess very bad things can happen to an individual and their community faster than a Chasid can recite the Mourner’s Kaddish and the pogroms that Jews were victims of for centuries ended up being small losses compared to the Holocaust。 That comes through in this book and resonates today。 The hapless cantor clinging to his scarecrow girlfriend was my favorite comedy moment of the book。 And I liked all the events involving Fanny and her blade。 But the wrap up was weaker than the set up and the transcendence I sought never materialized。 。。。more
